The 28th of April is designated as World Day for Safety and Health at Work, a significant event that emphasizes the importance of safety and health in the workplace. As Australia’s leading home care provider, AHomeCare is dedicated to prioritizing safety and health at work.

The International Labour Organization (ILO) initiated the observation of World Day in 2003 to raise awareness and prevent accidents and illnesses in the workplace. This initiative builds upon the ILO’s commitment to tripartism and social dialogue. Recognized by the United Nations, this celebration is an integral part of the ILO’s Global Strategy on Occupational Safety and Health, as highlighted in the Conclusions of the International Labour Conference in June 2003.

Advocacy is a key aspect of the Global Strategy. World Day for Safety and Health at Work serves as a crucial tool for promoting safe and healthy working conditions and raising the political profile of occupational safety and health. Additionally, it coincides with the International Commemoration Day for Dead and Injured Workers, which has been observed by the global trade union movement since 1996.

New and emerging occupational risks can arise from technological innovations, production processes (such as nanotechnology and biotechnology), changing working conditions (including higher workloads, downsizing-related work intensification, poor conditions associated with migration, and jobs in the informal economy), and evolving employment forms (like self-employment, outsourcing, and temporary contracts).

In Australia, Safe Work Australia is responsible for developing national policies to ensure safe workplaces across the country. AHomeCare aligns with Safe Work Australia in observing the annual World Day for Safety and Health at Work, actively contributing to the global effort to prevent occupational accidents and diseases.

Governments, employers, and employees share the responsibility of preventing on-the-job deaths and injuries. Governmental and private regulatory agencies play a vital role in establishing the necessary infrastructure, laws, and services to support employability and business growth. Furthermore, these agencies are responsible for enforcing compliance with occupational safety and health legislation and policies.
